To maintain specific standards of quality in the recycling industry, RIOS was created. RIOS stands for the Recycling Industry Operating Standard. RIOS, which was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and is certified by the American National Standards Institute. There are various parts of RIOS. For example, ISO 14001 focuses on environmental management standards while ISO 9001 focuses on quality management. OSHAS 18001 is another section of RIOS, and it deals with rules relating to health and safety management systems.

R2 refers to the best practices that are explicitly used by the electronics industry as well as electronic waste. With R2 certification, it means that a business is qualified and able to handle electronic waste responsibly. Part of this refers to the environmental stipulations that come with being R2 certified and making sure that items are recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. Other areas that R2 certification includes is safe storage practices, proper management systems, use of best data destruction practices, excellent management and demonstration of financial responsibility. R2 accreditation on its states that responsible recycling is taking place.

A combined R2/RIOS certification is also possible. The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries gives this combined certificate. This standard of management covers various areas including health and safety, environment and quality performance. The R2/RIOS certification is also recognized by the U.S General Services and the US Environmental Protection Agency. According to a survey conducted by the International Data Corporation, nearly half, 48.6% of customers only want to work with businesses who have been certified. Also, with this certification, customers can trust the quality of work that will be done at the organization since there are specific standards that must be met. These are just a few reasons why being R2/RIOS certified is essential.
